Gapstow BridgeThe Highlights
The Gapstow Bridge, found at 62nd Street in Central Park, offers one of the best views of the New York City skyline.
Situated at the northeast end of the Pond, this beautiful, schist bridge was initially built in 1874. Curving gracefully over the neck of the Pond at 59th Street, Gapstow is one of the iconic bridges of Central Park. It is the second bridge on the site. The first, a much more elaborate wood and iron bridge, deteriorated and was replaced in 1896. From the bridge, facing south, you can see the famed Plaza Hotel and distinctive New York skyscrapers rising from above the Park's trees. Looking southward in the winter and you'll see Wollman Rink's twirling skaters; in the warmer months you'll see the colorful amusements of Victorian Gardens. Gapstow stands 12 feet high, spans 44 feet of water, and stretches 76 feet in its full length.
