The PondThe Highlights
One of the Park’s seven bodies of water, The Pond was imagined as an escape from city streets.
The Pond is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Situated below street level, visitors can temporarily ignore the noises of the urban world and take a calming stroll along the winding pathways bordering the water. Despite the millions of visitors who walk by the water's edge each year, there is still a sense of solitude, particularly on the western arm bordering Hallett Nature Sanctuary.
Behind Hallett's enclosures is a 3.5-acre ecosystem where small animals and birds can thrive in a secluded habitat. In addition to the 240 migratory bird species that inhabit the Pond, the area is also known for its lovely sunset views. If you're like many of Central Park’s visitors you may have wondered "Where do the ducks go in winter?" Ducks can survive the cold and remain in Central Park as long as there is open water and they can feed on plants beneath the water’s surface. If water bodies freeze over, the waterfowl migrate south. It's uncommon for water bodies to completely freeze over today, so migration doesn't happen very often.
